Sylvia Lange

"The beauty of nature never fails to nurture my soul and awaken in me a deep desire to capture that beauty in paint. For it is in nature that one experiences connectedness to the whole of creation. My art is an expressive mix of what exists in life and what exists in me.

Syliva's favourite medium to capture that essence is Dye on Rice Paper. It is a wax-resist process. When the piece is fully waxed when complete, the light illuminates the layers of colour and gives the work a rich brilliance. Sylvia also enjoys working in watercolour, oils and acrylic. Each medium allows her the option of choosing the vehicle, which will best allow the expression of thoughts and feeling about a particular subject.

Sylvia tries to express very ordinary things in new ways: sometimes very rhythmic, stylized forms to reflect simplicity, and other times, in more realistic renderings to reflect the intricacies of creation. She sees life even in the most inanimate objects; such as weathered siding on a barn door, or a rusting old car door that once life in securely.

In portraiture, Sylvia seeks to capture the inner essence of the individuals. Children have an unguarded, fresh response to life.

When painting landscapes, Sylvia endeavors to create a mood, a space to be in. It can be a lonely tranquil space or a space that tells a story. In the process of developing a silk screening, she works with a subject until it evolves and is reduced to its most simplified form. Then it becomes its most expressive with the least amount of line and detail.

Sylvia studied art at the University of Alberta graduating with a Certificate of Fine Art and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology.
